Too Much Stuff? Let's Start With Your Closet!
Struggling with too many clothes? In this first episode of The Sorted Scene, I’ll share a simple trick to declutter your closet and decide what’s worth keeping. Plus, a call to action to kickstart your journey to a more organized wardrobe. Let’s get sorted!
Hi, I’m Kayden, and welcome to the very first episode of The Sorted Scene! In this podcast, we’ll explore common organization challenges and find creative solutions to help you take back control of your spaces. In each episode, I’ll start by introducing the challenge, then share some surprising statistics about it, and then explain my personal method for tackling it. At the end of each episode, I’ll leave you with a call to action to help you get started, so be sure to stay until the very end so you can take the first step to living a more sorted life. Sound good? Alright then, let’s get sorted!
Today’s challenge is one I know a lot of us struggle with—having too much stuff, specifically too many clothes. Have you ever just stared at your completely packed closet and said to yourself: “I have nothing to wear.” If you said yes, then you’re not alone! In fact, a study from Trunk Club found that 61% of Americans regularly struggle to find something to wear, even though their closets are full. And here’s the kicker—research from Movinga revealed that people don’t even wear at least 50% of their wardrobes, and another survey from The Container Store found that 33% of Americans say organizing their closet is one of the hardest challenges in their home, and 29% struggle the most with letting go of clothes.
Listen, I’ll be the first to admit—I’m definitely part of that 29%. I always tell myself, “Ah, I’ll eventually wear it,” or, “This has sentimental value; I can’t get rid of it.” But the reality? It’s just sitting there, collecting dust and taking up space. That’s when I realized I needed a system to help me decide what’s actually worth keeping.
Here’s what I do, and it’s ridiculously simple. At the start of the year, I turn all my hangers around so that they’re facing the opposite way. Then, every time I do laundry, I hang it back the correct way and after six months, I can clearly see which clothes I haven’t even touched. And here’s the best part—there’s no guessing, no guilt, just facts. If there is a shirt that’s still on a backwards facing hanger, then it hasn’t been worn in six months and it doesn’t need to be in my closet.
You may be asking yourself now, “okay... but what do I do with the clothes I’m not wearing?” Well, you have two options. If it’s something you no longer need or use, donate it so someone else can benefit from it. If it’s sentimental—like an old jersey or a concert tee that no longer fits—put it in a keepsake box. That way, you can still look back and hold onto those memories without taking up valuable closet space.
Now it’s time for this episode’s call to action: if you can, get up right now and turn all your hangers around. Seriously, just get up, and go do it! If you’re not in a place to do it right now, make a note, but do it as soon as you can. Trust me, this simple trick will change the way you look at your wardrobe, and in a month, 6 months, a year, or whatever time constraint you want to put on it, you’ll know exactly what needs to go.
And that wraps up the very first episode of The Sorted Scene!
